Rocketboom VideoBlog... vblogs... better than CNN?

Rocketboom :

I thought you might enjoy this daily vblog.... it's different than the mainstream media!

hope to see you all again soon!
james

"Rocketboom is a three minute daily video weblog based in New York City covering information and commentary ranging from top news stories to quirky internet culture. Agenda includes releasing each new clip at 9am EST, Monday through Friday. With a heavy emphasis on international arts, technology and weblog drama, Rocketboom is presented via online video and widely distributed through RSS.

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is an exciting web technology that allows viewers to subscribe and then download newly published content to their computers or portable players automatically once it becomes available. As a result, when a subscriber is ready to view the new video there is no download or buffer delay. [*note: the word 'subscribe' can be misleading because everything is free]

Rocketboom is currently one of the most popular videoblogs on the internet with more daily subscribers for original syndicated multimedia content than nearly any other site, including podcasts.

We differ from a regular TV program in many important ways. Instead of costing millions of dollars to produce, Rocketboom is created with a consumer-level video camera, a laptop, two lights and a map with no additional overhead or costs. Also, Rocketboom is distributed online, all around the world and on demand, and thus has a much larger potential audience than any TV broadcast. However, we spend $0 on distribution because bandwidth costs and space are donated, and $0 on promotion, relying solely on the viral nature of the internet. Finally, while TV programs have traditionally been uni-directional, Rocketboom engages its international audience in a wide range of topical discussions. "

Free music at SXSW-- south by southwest festival

south by southwest festivals : "SXSW Music
March 16-20, 2005

Hope you're all doing well.... SXSW is actually three festivals at the same time.... music/ film / and "interactive" IT... I thought you'd like the music most! james

read more below.....

'Now in its 18th year, the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, is a veritable fantasyland for music fans. There's a nearly 24-hour-a-day onslaught of live music showcases, parties and panels, as well as a whiplash-inducing propensity to run into other journalists, publicists, long-lost friends....' Billboard.com March 19, 2004

And you can listen to it for free!

"SXSW PLAYER: A POPULAR NEW FEATURE
SXSW Music Player The SXSW Music Player V.05 is a new and exciting way to explore the sights and sounds of SXSW 2005. You can listen to a continuous stream of all the acts, and the player will show you who you are listening to and give you a link to their band page. You can also use the quick search field to find a particular band and listen to just their track. We hope you have as much fun as we have been having with it. "

http://2005.sxsw.com/music/#

Every March SXSW Music delivers new opportunities to make your vision real. Musicians and the companies they work with have been using SXSW as a cost-effective way to promote themselves since 1987, and they come back year after year because SXSW works! It's a potent method to connect with press, radio, and other music industry players.

Over 1200 acts showcased last year before more than 8000 registrants from all over the world. Pop, jazz, country, blues, reggae, hip hop, electronica - every imaginable style of music, from nearly every continent - is represented each night at over 50 of Austin's premier stages, many within walking distance of one another. By day, the music industry's most accomplished and creative personalities collaborated, argued, and shared their experiences in dozens of panels, workshops, interviews, and meetings."

Using a non-standard browser might send you to jail ...

Perhaps you remember of this english Solaris user who was arrested because he made a tsnuami-relief donation using lynx, a text-based browser ? No, you don't ? To put it in a nutshell, his connexion to the web site was considered being a hack-attempt because it was different from the others (that's to say it didn't come from Internet Explorer ...), that's why armed policemen came and arrested him at home ...

Anyway, be aware that he has now been charged ...

Conclusion : Monopoly is very dangerous, and not only for Microsoft's competitors ...

Needing computing cycles ?

Sun Microsystems is launching a new grid computing service for companies which sometimes need high computing power but can't (or don't want to ...) afford a supercomputer ... If you have a problem to solve and need a quick answer, you can submit it to this new Sun service : hundreds of computers will simultaneously work on it, and you are likely to quickly receive the result. President of Sun Microsystems Jonathan Schwartz said : "The hallmark of a utility is a transparent price." Indeed, the pricing is clear : 1$ per CPU per hour ... You can watch the video of the announcement at this address ...

Junk Mail is rising ...

According to recent studies, spam has gone up ... but what is really annoying is that this rising has particularly been noticeable since the CAN-SPAM act, which aimed at reducing junk mail, was passed.

Moreover, spammers seems to improve their techniques : junk mail is now more precisely targeted : in January, for example, scam mails decreased by 40 %, as people are usually not ready to invest money during this month. On the contrary, January is usually seen as the bleakest month in the year, and consequently, porn spam dramatically increased ...

One of our lecturers had already told us : mail is dead ...

Open source beer !

Some geeks who like beer now will be able to claim "I only drink open source beer".
It is the first one in the world, and a proof that open source isn't only dedicated to software. Of course, all of you should only drink open source beer : first of all it is open source, and all of us know that the Microsoft beer is full of bugs...

But the real question is "what does that beer taste ?"

Alice and Bill.com - Independent Tech

Now your car is able to understand you ...

The company Affective Media has been working on creating a system able to recognize and understand human mood through their voice ! This feature is likely to be useful to adapt the behaviour of a machine to its user, and this system is already studied by Toyota to be implemented in cars.

Indeed, in the future, cars will include voice-activated commands, and consequently, adding this feature to the on-board system may help the car reacting appropriately : Angry or nervous drivers are far more prone to accidents than peaceful ones.

Unfortunately, this new technology will probably worsen a recent problem : drivers rely far too much on on-board technology, being convinced that thanks to electronics, their car is perfectly safe ...

I know there are Mac Fans amongst you ....

Today was the Apple Keynote, a great conference by Steve Jobs in which he announces the brand new products to be released ... For Mac Fans all around the world, this is a real event !

The main piece of news is the oncoming availability of the "Mac Mini" : a small, affordable Macintosh to be sold at pricing starting at 499$. Although very thin and design, this is also a powerful computer, and Steve Jobs rely on this low cost machine, described as "the most affordable Mac ever", to gather new customers who have always been thinking that "Apple is really too expensive" ... It's likely to be a very good idea.

Obviously, Apple is far from giving away its main product : the famous iPod ! A new version, called "iPod Shuffle" will soon be released. Including a flash memory of 512 MB or 1GB (no more hard drive), this new iPod is even smaller than the previous ones ...

A cell-phone, conceived with Motorola, has also quickly been presented : not many details, but its design may have been inspired from iPod ...

And last but not least, a few words about software : "Tiger", the next version of MacOS X, will be released in the middle of the year, whereas Microsoft "Longhorn" will not be ready before at least a year ... Steve Jobs obviously didn't forget to mention this detail ;) He also confirmed the success of iTunes, the Apple online music store : 230 billion songs have already been sold ...

1/3 of the victims of this tragic event are estimated to be children. Reporters from the various TV stations have already commented that in Indonesia, where more than 40% of the population are children, the streets in Acheh seemed oddly quiet. Google Library...
You always wanted to read Shakespeare in English, but you had no occasion to find Hamlet in Supelec's Library ? Google is (will be...) there to supply you with the needed cultural material you are looking for... What do you think of that?

the netclass site

I've made the index page of our site (http://supelec.netclass.free.fr).
There you'll be able to download some of the presentations (including Edouard's and mine), and many other very interesting things...

Well, I have to admit that my page is quite ugly, but it still is better than a list of files... You are an artist? Feel free to replace it with a creation of yours!
